A minimum of 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. Over 80 people were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations erupted when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities confirmed.
The International human rights organization expressed being "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The area of favelas near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Community Response
Community members have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement said over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the mission, along with numerous weapons.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in the city.
